Dr. Gary Patrick Nichols, DMD

Gary Patrick Nichols, DMD, 85, of Albany, GA, died Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.  A memorial service will be held Monday, October 23, 2023 at 11:00 am at Porterfield Methodist Church.  Rev. Chuck Knight will officiate.

Dr. Nichols was born in Birmingham, AL on June 25, 1938 to Herbert and Inez Nichols.  He lived in Birmingham and Gadsden, AL.

He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity at the University of Alabama and graduated in 1960 with a major in Biology. He obtained his DDS from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1964. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Navy and served at Parris Island, SC, Keflavik, Iceland, and the Marine Corps Supply Center, Albany, GA.

Dr. Nichols practiced General Dentistry in Albany, GA from 1967 until 2000.  He served as the Albany Area Dental Society President and Chairman of the Peer Review Committee. He was a member of The Georgia and American Dental Associations. 

Dr. Nichols was a member of Porterfield Methodist Church and The Alpha Sunday School Class.  He was also a member of the Tuesday Morning Men’s Bible Study Class.

He loved The University of Alabama and served as President of the Albany Area Alumni Association.  Due to his interest in gardening, he was a graduate of The University of Georgia’s Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program.

Dr. Nichols enjoyed playing golf at Doublegate Country Club, and being a member of the “Twelve and under golf group” where many life-long friendships were formed. Some of his favorite past-times included hunting with his dogs, and fishing and boating with family and friends at his home at Lake Mitchell, AL.      

Dr. Nichols was preceded in death by his son, Steven Patrick Nichols. Survivors include his wife, Pam Teague Nichols of Albany, GA, his daughter, Kirsten Nichols Cropp of Nashville, TN, grandchildren, Katherine Williamson Cropp, Chicago, IL, Griffin David Cropp, Nashville, TN, his sister, Sandra Nichols Zelley, Dallas, TX, nephews, Dr. Patrick Zelley (Carol Ann), Dallas, TX, and Ridgeway Zelley, New York, NY.

The family will receive friends Monday, October 23, 2023 in the Mabel Haley Parlor at Porterfield from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.
