Dorothy Riego Simmons

Dorothy (Riego) Simmons, 94, of Leesburg, GA, died July 8, 2024 at Lee County Health and Rehabilitation Center. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Rev. Aaron McCulley will officiate.

Dorothy was born in New Bedford, MA on August 9, 1929 to Manuel and Mary Mattos. She grew up there, graduated from High School and attend college when she met her future husband, Sailor, Tully George Simmons. He brought her back to Terrell County, GA where she raised her family and lived before moving to Lee County, GA in 1988.

She was a homemaker and mother, loved wrestling, the Atlanta Braves and her grandkids. Dorothy worked crossword puzzles and loved to gossip. She was born into the Catholic Faith and attended Dawson Assembly of God. In addition to her husband, Tully George Simmons, she was preceded in death by two children, Jean Turvin and Jack Simmons.

Survivors include her children, Mary Ann Bartlett of Leesburg, GA, Joyce (Thomas) Raley of Evans, GA, Alan (Pacita) Simmons of Leesburg, GA, Michael Simmons of Cottonwood, AL and Jerry (Charlotte) Simmons of Joppa, AL, a host of grandchildren, including Kristi Sue Simmons and Amanda Lynn Pridgen, and great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
