Doris M. Bateman

Doris Massey Bateman, 90, of Marietta, GA, formerly of Albany, GA, died September 28, 2013 at Manor Care Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Gillionville Baptist Church. Pastor Tony Heafs will officiate. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Hillcrest Cemetery in Sylvester, GA.

A native of Doerun, GA, born to the late Marion and Della Massey, Mrs. Bateman was a graduate of Sylvester High School and attended Business College. After World War II, she and her husband lived in Athens, GA where he attended The University of Georgia.

She worked as a secretary until their son, Edwin, was born in 1947. Doris then worked as a secretary for 28 years with the State of Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation and Court Services, during which time their daughter, Celeste, was born in 1950. She was an active member of the Gillionville Baptist Church, the Micah Sunday School Class and was also an avid gardener.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Edwin Neal Bateman, Sr., Survivors include a sister, Margie Powell and her husband, Brooks of Atlanta, GA, a son, Edwin N. Bateman, Jr. of Hickory, NC, a daughter, Celeste B. Shipp and her husband, Ken of Roswell, GA, her five grandchildren, Legh Beal and her husband, Mike with their two daughters, Catherine and Maggie of Mt. Airy, NC; Kim Kesting and her husband, Johnny with their three children, Leighton, John Wright and Kate of Nashville, TN, Elizabeth Gargis and her husband, Al with their two children, Lilly and Caroline of Hickory, NC; Neal Bateman and his wife, Ashley of Atlanta, GA and Lydon Small and his wife Erika of Franklin, TN.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until funeral time on Thursday at the Gillionville Baptist Church.
