David Dewayne Thompson Sr., 70, of Albany, GA died Monday, January 22, 2024 at his residence. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 11:00 am at Mathews Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Floral Memory Gardens. Rev. Chris Turner will officiate.
David was born in Memphis, TN on March 26, 1953 to Leslie Richard Thompson and Essie Waddell Thompson. Being the child of an Air Force member, he moved with his family to Albany in 1956 from Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL to Turner Air Field. He graduated from Albany High School in 1971 and then moved with his family to Mooresville, NC before returning to Albany in 1975. David owned and operated Southern Automotive for a brief period while also being employed, off and on, with Overhead Door as a Sales Representative, retiring after over thirty years. Once retired, he continued working with his good friend, Matthew Harrell of AAA Concrete.
David was a member of Lighthouse Ministries and enjoyed old cars, NASCAR and hunting and fishing. He was a master mechanic and could fix anything. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Gene Thompson. David loved his family above all else but his Savior and treated all his friends as family.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Thompson of Worth County, GA, his children, Wendy Wolfe (Ed) of Gulf Shores, AL, Iris Schaeffer (Bill) of Tracy, CA, Amanda Thompson (Jeremy Wood) of Plains, GA, James Thompson (Ashley Dollar) of Worth County, GA and Dewayne Thompson Jr. (Elizabeth) of Virginia Beach, VA, his siblings, Patty Thompson Diamond (Clyde) of Worth County, GA, Sandy Sigmon (Larry) of Thurmond, NC, Billy Watson (Amy) of Chattahoochee, FL and Stephen Singleton of Andalusia, AL and eleven grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday at Mathews Funeral Home.
