Curtis A. Burgess, 93, died Sunday morning May 7, 2017 at Georgia War Veterans Home Milledgeville, Georgia, following a lengthy illness. He is now resting peacefully in his Heavenly home with Jesus. Curtis was a long time resident of Warner Robins, GA, prior to moving to Albany, Ga. March 2007.
Funeral Service will be held Thursday May 11, 2017 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Mathews Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour before the service at 2:00 P.M. Interment will follow in Leesburg, Ga. Cemetery. Pastor Glynn Grantham, retired pastor of First Assembly in Warner Robins, GA will officiate.
Mr. Burgess was born January 16, 1924 in Berlin, GA. He was the son of Lacie Burgess and Sally Pyles Burgess. Curtis is survived by his loving wife of thirty eight years, Janie M. Burgess, son Doyle Burgess (Patty), daughter-in-law, Ann Burgess, step-daughters Linda Arnold (Johnny), Nancy Beaty (Sid), twin brother, Cleatis Burgess (Edna),granddaughters, Salley Crutchfield (Clay), Amy Jones (Brian), Kelly Barron (Steven), Brandie Carter (John), Erin Gilchrist (Mark), Holly Beaty, grandson, Derek Beaty, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, Eden and many nieces and nephews.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Wayne Burgess, step-son, David Lewis, great grandson, Hunter Crutchfield, brothers, Remus Burgess, J.T. Burgess, Romey Burgess, Harold Burgess, Earl Burgess, Lacie Burgess, Bennie Burgess, Dillard Burgess, sisters, Pearl Brice and Tessie Mae Chambers.
Curtis enlisted in the Army Air Corps, October 14, 1942 at eighteen years of age. He was a staff sergeant in the 421st Night Fighter Squadron in the South Pacific. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received November 4, 1944 in Leyte. Following his discharge on January 4, 1946, he worked as an independent carpenter for several years. He worked for many years in aircraft maintenance at Robins Airforce Base until he retired in 1986.
Curtis has always been very active and a generous supporter of his local church. In recognition of his enthusiastic support for the youth sports program, the soft ball stadium was named Burgess Field in his honor at The Assembly of Warner Robins, GA.
Pallbearers will serve are , Clay Crutchfield, Holden Crutchfield, Heath Crutchfield, Seth Palmer, Ethan Jones and Cody Jones.
