Chief Charles Ray Moore, 60, of Lee County, GA, died May 20, 2018 at Willson Hospice House after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Leesburg, GA. Rev. Lee Smith and Rev. Pete Daughtry will officiate. Interment will follow at Leesburg Cemetery with the Georgia State Patrol Honor Guard Flag Presentation and Masonic Rites will be provided by the Tri-County Memorial Club.

Born to the late Joe Moore and Della Faye Moore on November 21, 1957 in Levelland, TX, Charles moved to Leesburg, GA in 1974 from Canton, MS. and graduated from Lee County High School in 1976. He was in the Pecan Business for ten years and was a volunteer with the Leesburg/Lee County Fire and Rescue and a volunteer E.M.T for ten years before entering Law Enforcement.

He began his career with the Leesburg Police Department in 1982 and worked with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office from 1984 until 1988. After eleven years as the Chief Investigator for the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office, Charles accepted the Chief of Police possession and continued in that capacity until his death.

Charles won numerous awards throughout his career in Law Enforcement: including Officer of The Year for the State of Georgia and Investigator of The Year for the Southern United States. He served as District Representative of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, served on the advisory board at the ABAC Police Academy and was the first elected President of the Georgia D.A.R.E Association.

Charles had a long career in Law Enforcement and started the Leesburg/Lee County Foster Kid Toy Drive in 2001 and served as chairman every year until his death. He was also the owner of C & S Lawn Care and was a member of Kinchafoonee Baptist Church. He was also a member of Chehaw Lodge # 701 F & AM, a member and three time past-president of the Albany Shrine Club and a member of Hasan Shriners of Albany where he served on the Directors Staff. Charles enjoyed spending time with his family and friends around the pool and grilling out for them on the weekends. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe C. Moore.

Survivors include his best friend and wife, Sherry F. Moore of Lee County, GA, his mother, Della Faye Moore of Carthage, MS, his sons, Brandon (Nicole) Houston of Sherman, TX, Brion (Hope) Moore and Robbie (Sarah) McCue all of Leesburg, GA, his daughters, Jennifer Goins, Kristin Gillian and Christin (Lee) Purvis all of Leesburg, GA, his sisters, Patsy (Rickey) Ivey of Dawson, GA and Scharla (Scott) Bivings of Ridgeland, MS, his sisters-in-law, Wanda (Robert) Dollar and Terri (Robert) Barrett all of Leesburg, GA, a brother-in-law, Steve Richardson of Lakeland, FL, eight grandchildren, two great-grandsons, several nieces and nephews and Special Close Friends, Jimmy Cooper, Roy Peet, Ross Nix, Lee Purvis and Joe Sheffield all of Lee County, GA.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Mathews Funeral Home.
