Charles Hoyt Gay, 83, of Albany, GA, died September 6, 2017 at Wynfield Park Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 PM at Central Baptist Church. Rev. Timothy Gay will officiate. Interment will follow in New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Terrell County, GA.
Born to the late Charlie and Pauline Nation Gay, Mr. Gay was a native of Sasser, GA. In 1950, he graduated from Terrell County High School where he was a standout in football for the Green Wave, as well as an outstanding member of the Future Farmers of America and Quartet. After high school, Mr. Gay walked on at Auburn University and received a football scholarship. He joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict from 1955-1957. When he was discharged from the Navy, he moved to Albany, GA, where he was employed with the Central of Georgia Railroad as a switchman. In 1992, after more than 35 years of service, he retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad as a yardmaster. Mr. Gay was a member of Central Baptist Church and was an ordained Deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Smith Gay of Albany, GA; his children, Lorraine Gay Alexander and her husband, Russ of Albany, GA and Stanley Gay and his wife, Robin of Anderson, SC; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Gay of Carrollton, GA, Katherine Gay of Blue Ridge, GA, and Tori Alexander of Statesboro, GA. Mr. Gay also had a number of cherished nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Central Baptist Church.
