Charles Oliver “Charlie” Horne, CLU, 73, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully at his home in Leesburg on Thursday, January 24, 2019 following a two year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 11:00 am at Matthews Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at 3:00 pm at Park Hill Mausoleum in Columbus, Georgia. The United States Army will perform Military Honors. Mr. Dale Hodges and Rev. Robert Greene will officiate.
Charlie was born on March 27, 1945 to the late James O. and Georgia W. Horne at Martin Army Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. He attended Baker High School distinguishing himself both academically and athletically as the president of the Key Club, quarterback and captain of the football team, and senior superlative. After graduation he attended the University of Georgia and played some football prior to an injury. He received his BBA in Finance from the University of Georgia in 1967 and also received the honor of Distinguished Military Graduate ROTC. He entered the US Army upon graduation and was assigned to the US Army Transportation Center, Fort Eustis, VA where he met his wife, Barbara. He served his country at this installation for three years progressing to a final rank of Captain and the installation’s Finance and Accounting Officer. He resigned his commission in 1970 and began his career with Prudential Insurance in Newport News, VA. He later transferred to Columbus, GA and was promoted to division manager in Albany, GA. The division he led was recognized as the Southeast Region’s highest producer. Charlie began his career as a certified financial planner in 1982 with Financial Advisors, Inc. In 2000, Charlie accompanied his wife to Germany to an overseas assignment. While there Charlie entered the Federal government serving as the Director of Youth Services for the 284th BSB. In 2005, the couple transferred to the Marshall Center in Garmisch, Germany. Upon returning to the United States, Charlie continued his federal career working at both Fort Benning and the Marine Corps Logistics base in Albany. He retired in 2010.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Barbara Carter Horne of Leesburg, GA, a son Charles R. Horne (Melissa) of Albany, GA, a daughter, Kimberly Horne Luque (Shawn) of Bonaire, GA; eight grandchildren: McKenzie Horne, Carter Horne, Emma Horne, Lauren Horne, Reid Luque, Katherine Luque, Logan Luque, and Anna Luque, a brother, Jack W. Horne (Sylvia) of Phenix City, AL, and a niece Karen Horne Sims (Billy) and their daughter Karly of Phenix City, AL; a sister-in-law, Terri Schulze (Randy) and their children, Christopher Schulze, Eric Schulze and Natalie Garcia of San Antonio, TX, and his faithful dog “Buddy”.
Charlie was a member of both St. Teresa Catholic Church and Porterfield United Methodist Church, Albany, GA. He was very active in the local youth sports programs voluntarily coaching baseball, basketball and football for the church, the local YMCA and City of Albany. He influenced the lives of many young men over his lifetime.
Those wishing to honor Charlie’s memory may do so by donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Mathews Funeral Home.
