ALBANY - Mrs. Charlene Ruth Litchfield Martin, 89, of Albany died Monday, July 28, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family and pets.

Mrs. Martin was born in Rutland, Vermont to the late Roy Stearns Litchfield of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and the late Helen Velda Bourquin Litchfield Pheil of St. Petersburg, Florida. She was the step daughter of the late Abram Louis Pheil of St. Petersburg. A 1941 graduate of St. Petersburg High School, Mrs. Martin attended nursing school in Pensacola, FL and became a registered nurse in Florida in 1948.

A resident of Albany for over 60 years, Mrs. Martin was a charter member of Porterfield United Methodist Church. She was an avid sportswoman who won a city championship in tennis and enjoyed golf, volleyball, bowling, gardening and walking. In her earlier years she was a Grey Lady for Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. A devoted animal lover, Mrs. Martin adopted many rescues as pets during her lifetime. Mrs. Martin became a rural mail carrier in 1975 and later retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

Survivors include her son, Michael James Martin (Debra) of Sandersville, GA; and daughters Kathy Martin Krinke (Steve) of Albany and Nancy Denise Martin Bryan (Tim) of Tifton. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Deborah Charlene Martin George (Darin) of Conyers; Tammi Lynn Martin Knight (Jonathan) of Reynolds; Christi Michelle Martin Griffin (Jayson) of Oglethorpe; Jennifer (Jenna) Gaye Macheers (fiance Andy Moyer) of Albany; Wesley Roger Thornhill, Preston Glenn Thornhill (Kayla), and Trevor Marti n Thornhill, all of Tifton. Great grandchildren include: Natalie, Abigail, Sophia, Ava Grace, Owen, Sadie, Layne, Lauryn, and Landon.

Friends and Family are invited to gather and share in her memory this Thursday from 5:30pm until 7:30pm at the home of Jenna Macheers and Andy Moyer 2307 Hawthorne Drive, Albany, GA

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Albany Humane Society or the Willson Hospice House in Albany.
