Carl Sowell

V.C. “Carl” Sowell, Jr., 83, of Albany, GA, died Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be Monday, July 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Gillionville Baptist Church. Rev. Roy Cook, Rev. Stephen Sowell and Mr. Greg Sowell will officiate. Interment will follow at Leesburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 7, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.

Carl was born in Vidalia, GA, to Vernon Carroll Sowell, Sr. and Ada Scott Sowell, the youngest of nine children. He married his life partner, Mae, on Christmas Day, 1956. Carl loved his Lord, his family, and his Church. He cared deeply for people and encouraged everyone he met. He was a natural cheerleader for others. In his view, he never had a problem, as he viewed each situation as “just another opportunity” for the Lord to work his way and his will.

Carl spent his working career with Piggly Wiggly Southern of Vidalia, GA, retiring as District Manager with responsibility for the “PIG” stores in Southwest Georgia. He was loved and respected by all of his employees who knew "Mr. Sowell" as “firm, but fair” in all situations.

Carl devoted his later years to Gillionville Baptist Church where he served a number of years as Chairman of the Deacons, and where his wise counsel was sought and valued by many. His life was marked by love of people, trust in God, and his positive outlook that in God’s time all things would work out for our good and for God’s glory.

In addition to his wife of sixty-two and a half years, Mae Sharpe Sowell, left to cherish his memory are his children, Gregory C. Sowell (Leah) and Lisa Anne Sowell, his grandchildren, Rebecca S. Nichols (Dan), Stephen G. Sowell (Amanda), Anna S. Harrison (Scott), his five great-grandchildren, James Daniel Nichols, Margarite Mae Harrison, Ruth Louise Sowell, Jane Carleen Sowell, and Ramsay Scott Harrison.

In lieu of flowers those desiring may make donations in memory of "Mr. Carl" to Gillionville Baptist Church, 4614 Gillionville Road, Albany, GA 31721.
