Betty Jean Freeman Beamon, 67, of Smithville, GA died Friday, January 26, 2018 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loved ones, after battling a series of “one thing after another”. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.
Mrs. Beamon was born in Parrott, GA to Charles Hubert Freeman and Cleo Mildred Ryals Freeman. She was the sister to the late Paul, James and Robert Freeman as well as the late Linda Lewis and Cleo Lambert. She was retired from the Department of Corrections as their food service manager and was of the Baptist faith. She graduated high school and met her husband soon after. The two purchased land and began their family in the Neyami community between Smithville, GA and Leesburg, GA on their farm. They would have been married forty-eight years on January 30, 2018. Betty worked at the Smithville Post Office as Post Master Relief while holding down a full time job in the Lee County School System within the food service department. While at Lee County, she became the leading force behind the unionization and fair wages for the ladies who worked behind the counters serving the elementary and high school children. She was also a full time mother and wife caring for her family and managing her home, working in the yard and garden, and providing a clean home and hot supper each night. Her sunset career continued in food service as she opened a cutting edge transitional center for the State of Georgia Corrections Department, retiring in 2011.
Survivors include her husband David Lewis Beamon, Smithville, GA, a daughter, Betsy Beamon Diaz and spouse Jesse, Lee County, GA a son, Daniel Flint Beamon and spouse Jeff, Austin, TX, a brother, David Freeman and spouse Karen, Leesburg, GA, a sister, Diane Alred and spouse Jimmy, Leesburg, GA, a sister-in-law, Peggy Freeman, Bronwood, GA, three grandchildren, Mikayla Noland, Alana Noland, and Dayton Jordan, and she leaves behind her favorite dog Dusty and his wife Shooter-Girl. The family will receive friends at Mathews Funeral Home following the funeral services.
