Mrs. Barbara Carden Burgess, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 10, 2016, in her home at Sunrise Assisted Living in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Private funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Dr. William D. (Biff) Coker will officiate. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
The daughter of the late Frank Conrad and Marjorie Conrad, she was born November 25, 1932 in New York. Mrs. Burgess graduated from Sarasota High School in 1950. She attended Weslyan School for Girls in Macon, Georgia. She later transferred to the University of Georgia where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and was a sweetheart for the Sigma Nu Fraternity where she met Wallace Carden. She graduated from The University of Georgia in 1955. She was married to the late William E. Burgess of Albany, Georgia.
Mrs. Burgess was an elementary school teacher in Dougherty County for many years.
Mrs. Burgess served as President of the Charity League in 1983 as the League celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Under Mrs. Burgess' leadership a 'new look' was given to the hospital uniforms. The "Pink Lady" uniforms were now Phoebe Putney's new colors and the new look set them apart from other volunteers. Mrs. Burgess was a member of the Suburban Woman's Club. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Mrs. Burgess loved living in Atlanta, Georgia where she was surrounded by family. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, Great-grandmother, lovingly called "Bana".
Mrs. Burgess is survived by her three daughters, Debbie Carden Henry (Ken) of Marietta, Georgia, Lisa Carden Skates (David) of Grayson, Georgia and Cathy Carden Muggridge of Buford, Georgia. She is survived by 7 grandchildren, Jason Henry, Haley Henry Barnett, Alex Henry, Jennifer Skates Riddle, Katie Skates Davis, Allison Muggridge and Mary Cathryn Muggridge. She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren, Sarah Barnett, Avery Barnett, Caiden Riddle, Colton Davis and Mason Davis.
Very special thanks to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living in Lawrenceville, Georgia and Homestead Hospice where she received exceptional love and care and enjoyed many new friendships. She was lucky to have found love again with her special friend Frank. They enjoyed many years of companionship together.
