Ann Newlin Duke was born August 25, 1918 in Arlington, Georgia. She went on to be with the Lord on March 10, 2012.
A celebration of her life will be held at Mathews Funeral Home, 3206 Gillionville Road, Albany, Georgia on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 12:00 PM. Visitation will be held one hour before funeral time.
Ann was affectionately known as "Mama Duke" by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband James Clyde Duke, mother Gladys Nixon Davis, father Lucius Kennerly Newlin and brother Dr. Ken Newlin.
Ann attended Mount de Sales Academy boarding school in Macon, Georgia. She then completed school in Albany, Georgia. She lived in Quitman, Georgia and Albany, Georgia most of her 93 years at which time she raised six children and experienced the birth of many grandchildren. She owned Ann's Beauty Shop until her retirement.
After her husband passed away in 1993, she moved to San Angelo, Texas where she became active in Glen Meadows Baptist Church. She joined in the activities of the Republican Women of Concho Valley where she enthusiastically participated in fundraisers and the election of George W. Bush as Governor of Texas and later President of the United States. She was trained and participated in the Code Blue neighborhood watch where she patrolled the neighborhood to keep it safe. She actively participated in the social activities at Bentwood Country Club.
Ann moved to Pecan Plantation in Granbury, Texas where she was active in the Pecan Plantation Country Club, Hillside Baptist Church and politics.
She later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where she was official greeter at Hyde Park Baptist Church. In 2005 she moved to Port St. Joe, Florida where she attended Sunday school at First Baptist Church and was later a member of Long Avenue Baptist Church.
Ann's life reflected a joyful good natured attitude. She truly knew how to love, laugh and live as her family and friends, the staff at the Bridge at Bay St. Joe and Covenant Hospice lovingly cared for her in the last days of her life.
Ann was a devoted wife and loving Mother and Grandmother. She traveled and enjoyed her golden years. She will be remembered for her sparkling blue eyes, lovely smile and unselfish love for others as she faithfully loved her family and served her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Survivors include her children Jim and his wife Gayle Duke of Dixie, GA, Eve-Anne and her husband Warren Wall of Port St. Joe, FL, Gladys McDonald of Valdosta, GA, David and his wife Debra Duke of Clermont, FL, Starr Strese of Dixie, GA, Debbie Duke of Franklin, NC, a brother Fred Clark Newlin of Jericho, Island, GA and many grandchildren.
